Yard Sale

This Saturday we are having our Adoption Benefit Yard Sale. I can honestly say I am not looking forward to it. Yard sales can sometimes be such a headache. If it weren't for the fact that we need money to help fund our outrageously expensive adoption, then I would just pack up everything and bring it to Goodwill. I have recruited my little sister and brother to help us that day. When my sister asked what time she would need to get up that day to start setting up, I told her around 5am if not earlier. You should have seen the look she gave me! She is a teenager and enjoys her sleep. I do want to thank our friends and family that have donated items for Saturday. I hope it is a big success.

Does anyone have any advice for having a yard sale? Others have suggested selling drinks and possibly snacks. Has anyone does this? Was it worth it?

Oh, too funny- we're having one on Saturday, also!! (Or else, I'd totally stop by and shop from ya!) I'm not planning on doing it this time, but at the last sale we had I sold packages of cookies- 3 for a buck. I sold all but 1 bag (which my girlfriends and I ate). We usually have at least 2 garage sales each year and there's typically 3-4 families (our friends) who do them together. As far as selling baked goods and beverages, I would highly recommend making a rather large sign letting people know what the money is for, perhaps with a photo of you and Shane in Russia and maybe a pic of Bryson with you guys, too.
I hope you have a very successful sale!!

I would put out a donation jar too. So that if some one wants to just give you money they can. I hope you make so much money that it takes all night to count it.

A couple helpful tips from your friend down south....
Start the night before by doing the entire set up - pricing, organizing, etc. That way the only thing you have to do at 5AM is pull everything out to your driveway.

Start your morning sale with coffee for $1.00. Walmart has great (cheap) throw away coffe containers similar to what you can buy at 7-11. Who wouldn't spend a $1.00 for coffee at 5AM?

Invest a little in yard signs and post them at the end of your street and at busy intersections near your home. The more people the better!

Good luck! You'll make a ton!

I wish you the best of luck with your garge sale. My husband and I had people donate as well and we did our first garage sale 2 weeks ago. We didn't bargan too much with the customers. We let them feel as tho they were getting a good deal, but we were willing to have stuff letf over for a second sale...so we could make more money. We raised a little over $1200 on the first one and our second one is this Saturday...we are hoping for another $1000. Oh and we sold donutes for 75 cents each..not a huge amount of profit...but every bit counts..we ended up making about $15.00 on them.

Try ads in Craigslist and I have also hear of people doing ads on the Spanish radio channel and it helped. Don't bother pricing pieces it waste a bunch of time! Set aside 1 tables, 5 dollar tables etc. Just price the big pieces. Good luck!

I've had a bunch of garage sales over the past two years. Next one is scheduled for January.
My best tip is to put that it is for an adoption on your signs. I've heard of people putting up the picture of their child as well (which I obviously haven't been able to do). We had a bunch of people come because we said it was for an adoption. It felt weird at first but I'm super glad we did it.

Good luck.
